FTSE gains 0.4%

FXStreet (Mumbai) - The London’s FTSE advanced today after suffering sharp losses in the previous session due to the weakness in the Energy stocks.

The Ftse traded 0.64% higher at 6222.30 levels at the time of writing, compared to the previous session’s close of 6182.72. The index breadth is positive with an advance-decline ratio of 84:16. The Ftse Telecom index advanced 1.76%, followed by a 1.74% gain in Aerospace and Defense index. The Oil Equipment Services and Distributions index is up 1.64%, while the Oil and Gas index is up 0.58%.

Among the index stocks, shares in Hargreaves Lansdown., gained 2.97%, followed by shares in Capita, which gained 2.74%. Other major gainers include BAE Systems, Intertek, and Pearson. Meanwhile, on the minus side are Randgold; down 1.73%, Coca Cola HBC AG; down 1.62%, Sainsbury; down 0.92%.

On the data front, the UK CPI for November printed lower-than-expected at a 12-year low of 1.00%. Consequently, the 10-yr Gilt yield has weakened by 4.5 basis points to trade at 1.76%.

Ftse Technical Levels

The index has an immediate resistance located at 6238.60 (Oct. 20 low), above which gains could be extended to 6294.64 (Oct. 13 low). Meanwhile, support is seen at 6182.72 (Dec. 15 low) and 6143.80 levels.

EUR/USD finally broke above the 1.25 mark to hit its highest level in nearly 3 weeks, supported by better-than-expected European PMIs and pushed even higher following upbeat ZEW German survey.
