US initial jobless claims rise less than expected

FXStreet (Mumbai) - The US labor department data released on Thursday showed the first time applications for unemployment benefits rose slightly, but stayed near four decade lows lows, a sign that the labor market continues to improve.

Jobless claims stay below 300K for the 22nd consecutive week

The initial jobless claims rose to 270K in the week ended July 31, compared to the estimated rise to 273K from previous week’s print of 267K. The 255,000 reading two weeks earlier was the lowest since November 1973. The four-week average of claims, which provides a more accurate picture of the labor market strength, decreased to 268,250 last week from 274,750.

The continuing claims fell by 14,000 to 2.26 million in the week ended July 25.
